Before you check in, let Sydney check in on you.

Most visitors arrive in Sydney and go straight to their hotel. You won't. Your private guide meets you in the arrivals hall, helps with your luggage, and takes you on a quiet loop through the city's most beautiful corners before the day even begins, while the light is still soft and the streets belong mostly to locals.

First stop is your hotel to drop bags with the concierge. Then the morning opens up.

Mrs Macquarie's Chair comes first: the sandstone ledge carved for the Governor's wife in 1810, now one of the finest vantage points in the city. The Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and the water between them, all in one frame. The photo you'll send home before you've even unpacked.

From there a drive through Rushcutters Bay and Elizabeth Bay gives you your first feel for the harbourside suburbs that define Sydney's inner east: the marina, the fig trees, the quiet streets that don't make it onto postcards but should.

Then south through the Eastern Suburbs to Bondi Beach: a drive-through rather than a stop, seeing it the way locals do on a weekday morning rather than fighting for space on the sand. Then around to Icebergs, the iconic ocean pool at the southern end of Bondi, one of the most photographed spots in Australia and worth every cliché.

Breakfast is at Bronte. A proper sit-down meal at one of the cafés overlooking the beach, the kind of breakfast that tells you you've arrived somewhere worth arriving. Unhurried, with the ocean in front of you and the rest of the day still ahead.
