The Hidden Gems of Pokolbin: Why First Creek is a Must-Visit

Travel

Introduction

When people think of the Hunter Valley, they often think of the “Big Three.” But for those of us who live and breathe these vineyards, the real magic happens at the family-owned estates where you can still smell the fermenting grapes from the verandah. On my most recent scouting trip for Todd Tours, I spent the afternoon at First Creek Wines, and it reminded me why this region is world-class.

The First Creek Experience

Located on McDonalds Road, First Creek is a “winemaker’s winery.” Led by the Silkman family (including Liz Silkman, often called the “Chardonnay Queen”), this isn’t just a tasting room — it’s a hub of innovation.

What I loved about this visit:

The Viewing Window: Unlike many cellar doors, you can actually look through a massive window into the winery. Seeing the tanks and the bottling line in action gives my guests a real connection to what’s in their glass.

The “Winemaker’s Table”: Their tastings are informative without being “snobby.” Whether you’re a novice or a collector, the staff here treat everyone like a local.

The Standout Pour: Their Single Vineyard Chardonnay is currently unbeatable. It’s crisp, elegant, and perfectly represents the Hunter’s unique soil.

Why I’m adding it to our Bespoke Itineraries

At Todd Tours, I look for venues that offer more than just a drink. I look for a story. First Creek provides that “insider” feeling. It’s the perfect mid-day stop after a morning at Audrey Wilkinson or Tyrrell’s.

Todd’s Tip: If you visit in the late afternoon, grab a glass of their Botanica Sparkling and head to the verandah — it’s one of the best spots in Pokolbin to spot kangaroos grazing as the sun starts to dip.
